Desperation stinks to high heaven
Before you shift business gears into completely uncharted waters...
..remember that people have long memories.
I was chatting with a client the other day about how we can still work together despite the immense challenges that lie ahead.
Shortly thereafter, the topic of how people are re-positioning their business models popped up.
I remarked that I had been bombarded by a slew of free webinars by business owners that were apparently holding back on all of these additional, marketable business skills that they possessed. I told him that I didn’t realize that everyone has suddenly become wellness, productivity and mindset experts.
He was equally surprised, adding that the amount of “pandemic business experts” was astounding.
While I laughed for a second, my tone immediately shifted to annoyance, not because I would ever fall for any of these jokers’ BS sales tactics, but because there are people out there searching for real help from real experts, and they’re getting duped into thinking that this online course or call is from someone who has a lengthy track record in this space.
As a result, these newly-minted, self-proclaimed experts who fell out of the woodwork are taking precious attention and clients from ACTUAL experts in these spaces - experts who’ve spent years developing their methodologies and frameworks and have said track record.
So what am I saying?
I’m saying that now is not the time for desperation and flail around until you can figure out a way to make a buck.
It’s time to hunker down, figure out what problems your clients are experiencing right now and determine how your expertise helps solve those problems. And if your expertise doesn’t solve specific client problems right now, how else can you help them without jumping into an area that you know next-to-nothing about?
How else can you develop, maintain and strengthen relationships with those you serve?
Remember - the actions and integrity - or lack thereof - that you display during this time will not be forgotten by your clients, colleagues and mentors in your community.
Act accordingly.
Besides, desperation stinks to high heaven.
