There's no right or wrong way - there's only your way.
When it comes to your photos...
...it’s your opportunity to be you.
What am I going wear?
For many speaker, author, consultant and trainer experts, they have this preconceived notion about how they need to present themselves to their audiences.
They believe that there is only one way to dress in their photos, as if there is some type of promotional photo template that they must follow.
I hear it in the responses of many of my clients during their pre-session strategy calls.
“I can only wear conservative outfits…”
“There’s no way I can get away with that…”
“I don’t know about that, it might bring too much attention to me…”
I counter their apprehensions with one simple question:
“Would you wear this outfit in front of your clients or on the stage?”
If the answer is no, then fine - keep the outfit in your closet on the day of your session and save it for something else.
But, if the answer is yes, well then it’s time to change the conversation in your head about the way you present yourself on camera.
Look - when you’re in the business of building relationships with those you serve, you need to show up in your photos as you do in real life.
You need to own who you are, on the inside and out, and present that as honestly as possible to your audience.
The folks who need your help and resonate with who you are as a person will gravitate towards you, while everyone else will move on.
And that’s exactly what we want as business owners.
It’s not the time to put on a show, put on airs, or be anything other than a genuine article.
If you go on a shopping spree before your session and buy a bunch of shit that you normally don’t wear, and have it on display throughout every photo you share online, your audience will connect with the person presented in the photos.
And, when they see you in real life and you look completely different, that will adversely affect the level of trust they have in you.
The moment that their trust wavers, you’ve lost them - probably for good, especially considering that there’s a million other experts in your space (as there are in every space).
Rather than investing in new outfits to “impress,” or “take it up a notch,” spend more time really zoning in on how you actually present yourself in front of paying clients.
If it’s good enough for you when doing your thing, then it’s more than enough for the pictures.
There is no right or wrong way to present yourself in front of the camera - there’s only your way.
Own it and lean into it when you’re in front of the camera.
It’s magical when you do :)
