Seeing moments that you don't
What is the value of a professional photographer?
They see moments and opportunities that you don’t.
The other day, I decided to go old school and walk around the neighborhood with my camera in hand to photograph anything interesting that I saw.
Street photography was the gateway drug that led me to serving you folks, by the way :)
While walking, I saw some interesting stone work at the top of one of the buildings down the block and decided to snap some photos of it.
While negotiating my composition, and working to frame out a couple trees in the way of the design work, I could see out of the corner of my eye a mother pushing a baby carriage who was about to stroll past me.
But, instead of just walking past, she stopped.
Not because she was being polite enough to wait for me to get my shot before she walked in front of the camera.
I could see her eyes gaze over and up to where I was shooting.
Then, I noticed an interesting, “what the hell is he photographing?” expression pop onto her face.
And then, she turned her attention back to the sidewalk and kept on pushing the stroller right on by.
I’ve witnessed this dumbfounded reaction to where I’m pointing my camera on many occasions, whether during a street photography session, or during my client work.
And those moments help reinforce one essential component to the work that I do with those I serve:
I see moments and opportunities that they don’t.
Whether it’s a fleeting expression, gesture, or interaction, these little moments are valuable visual assets to share within the proper context, whether it’s for their online content, or other marketing and promotional needs.
It’s because they’re natural and real.
And, with an untrained eye, they’re difficult to identify and nearly impossible to capture with a camera.
As a result, these clients are unable to capitalize on a magical moment that is now gone forever.
That’s the value of hiring a professional photographer - whether it’s for your portraits, live events, or virtual meetings.
You trust that their expertise behind the camera guides them in a way to capture the types of candid and compelling images that connect with your people, and inspire them to learn more about how you can help solve their problems.
Now, every now and then, you might look at your photographer and wonder aloud, “what they hell are they photographing?” while doing some weird shit with their body or pointing their camera into a seemingly uninteresting part of the room.
But, at the end of the day, they’re working hard to capture compelling moments that only serve to benefit your image portfolio…
…only moments that they can see as clear as day.
