Slide-ing your presentation into online content
Why struggle with creating social media content from scratch?
“Slide” your presentation into your online content!
One of the biggest misconceptions that I hear from speakers, authors and other expert-based businesses is that it’s difficult to create content for social media and their blogs.
Granted, it can be a time consuming activity, but, they fail to take one important factor into account.
They already have a ton of material at their disposal ready to be shared.
Here’s an example:
I was on the phone with a potential client and as we discussed how branded lifestyle portraits and image content creation would help benefit his new speaker business, he mentioned that he was totally confused as to how to leverage social media.
When I asked him what he’s already written in terms of content for his presentations, he mentioned that he’s created around 450 slides for various talks - some are more technical, some more personal, and others a combination of the two.
Regardless, each of them has several bulleted story points for him to work into the talk.
Holy shit - 450 SLIDES! Sweet Jesus, that’s a mother load!
I told him that he’s sitting on a goldmine of content.
His starting point for creating social posts is well established and all we need to figure out is which slides are great to use as is, and which need to be visually punctuated with branded lifestyle portraits and other image content, and he’s off to the races.
You see, your intellectual property does not live in silos that are to be used for very specific purposes.
Repurpose it everywhere - on your website, on social, in your blog posts and when in conversation with potential clients.
For some, the hesitation lies in that they believe that if pieces of their presentation are shared on social, that will give everything away and no one will book them to present to their companies, groups and associations.
Does it, though?
Rather than think about it in terms of giving away the farm, think about it as baiting a hook to draw people in and leave them wanting more…
...and wanting you to share this expertise with those in their groups, organizations and communities.
It’s one thing to share an article or a social post packed with information; it’s quite another to have the author of that idea present it in front of the room live.
Now, with respect to the slides for the presentations, sure, I can see holding off on posting those directly to your pages so that they are special for the eyes in the room.
Makes total sense to leave some things unique for the in-person experience.
But the information and sentiments that you share with those story points are too important not to be shared through your online content.
And you can visually punctuate these important stories with branded lifestyle portraits and other image content that doesn’t involve the actual slide itself.
Remember, when it comes to social, you’re looking to build a connection with those you serve through informative, entertaining and inspirational content.
In other words, you want to offer VALUE with each and every post
And you’ve already created a ton of it, so why start from scratch when you’ve already built a fortress of ready-made content?
In addition to saving time on creating brand new social and blog content, sharing the story points from your presentation slides also creates consistency throughout your online presence.
Consistency helps create the types of relationships that lead to audience members taking the next step and hiring you for your specialized help.
Which leads to on-boarding magical clients, :)
You have a wealth of information at your fingertips that can be easily repurposed into valuable content that will go a long way with those in your audience.
Use it to your advantage and create a digital footprint that draws more eyeballs to your business.
I talk a lot about this and other visual storytelling strategies in my blog.
