What are your quirky, fun facts?
What are your quirky, fun facts?
Let your audience in on something fun and different.
Although it is important to impart your thought leadership and provide valuable lessons through storytelling with your social media content, it’s also just as vital you share aspects of your human being side, as well.
For many years, I treated my social media feeds as if they were an extension of my photography portfolio.
No story or teachable moment in the caption. No hashtags. I didn’t engage people’s comments. It was just a place to post what I thought were great shots that I’ve taken, and nothing more.
And, not surprisingly, no one paid attention.
It wasn’t until I received some amazing advice from several colleagues that basically told me that in order for people to invest their time in you, you must give them a reason to CARE ABOUT YOU.
My work is simply the foundation - the magic is in creating a connection with others.
Ah, so you mean I need to put way more effort into this, huh?
Yes!
And, so I did, and now, I post a wide variety of stories that share not only who I am as a human being, but I’m also imparting a lot of lessons that I’ve learned along the way through these shares.
For example, I’ve talked a lot about cigars and how much I love them, as well as my decision to wear mostly black t-shirts everyday, and my love of comedy podcasts, to name a few, fun facts about me.
One of my clients, Ted Rubin, is a wizard at this.
He shares a TON of his life on social, in addition to a ton of thought leadership on relationship-based marketing.
One of his biggest quirks that he shares constantly is his sock collection. The man posts so many shots of his socks, he’s created a hashtag around it! Google #TedSockie, and you’ll see exactly what I mean.
I was photographing him during a recent thought leader event, and at lunchtime, Ted was speaking with a group of people. As I was walking past the group with my camera, I noticed he was inching up his pant leg and was pointing to his sock.
As the group was admiring his sock - I was too, by the way, :) - I fired off a couple shots before he covered them up again.
Out of the pile of shots that I captured of him speaking from that event, this was the first image he leveraged as a social media post:
Some of his captions are much longer, but, this short and sweet one was quite poignant and hit the spot, :)
And, that’s the fun part about creating consistent, social media content - not all of it needs to be based completely on your thought leadership, services, and, generally speaking, your what.
Paint your story through your social posts with a much broader brush, and include fun posts like this that illustrate your personality and disposition in order to be more relatable to your audience.
I talk a lot about how to identify and leverage these fun quirky aspects of your personality in my one-on-one, idea generation program...
It’s called the Idea Nugget Incubator.
In this program, you will learn to rewire your awareness so that you will see aspects of your life in a way that can parse out the juicy nuggets and convert those details into informative, entertaining and inspiring content for your audience.
Rather than sitting in front of a keyboard with your hands paralyzed because you can’t think of a caption to write, bank a wealth of idea nuggets over the course of your day and visit them when you need to write social media content for the upcoming month.
If you’d like more information on the Idea Nugget Incubator program, you can check it out right here.
PS - For those of you who aren’t in the know, I mail out these blogs 3x a week, and lemme tell you, they’re a real party, so, if you’d like to get in on this, sign up for it here and I’ll throw in a free gift for you, because I care, :)
